As a taxpayer in the US I for one am furious at the purchasing that goes toward software in our schools. The argument that "that's what they will use in the real world" is disingenuous at best. A 5th grader will go through 7 more years of school with a probable minimum of 5 MS Office updates. Updates which very often change the interface, menu structure and file format. This makes nearly everything that was application specific for the that 5th grader many generations obsolete by the time they graduate. Why then was all of that money spent when they were in the 5th grade? There is no practical value in providing MS Office or for that matter many other proprietary products in most educational situations. 56% of American jobs require the use of a computer - barely more than half (citation is needed but I'm too lazy right now to find the survey). One might argue that having them learn Openoffice.org isn't any better but I would suggest that if an application is going to become obsolete anyway shouldn't we use wisdom and choose a powerful and free one? I challenge anyone to produce a resume in Word and print it and compare it with one printed via Openoffice.org and tell me the difference. The money spent of platforms and applications while the children are young is ridiculous and would very well be spent on something .... oh I don't know like textbooks.

The problem is there is no choice. I live in Philly and Comcast is the ONLY high speed provider in my area. It's a monopoly and it's disgusting. This move to cut people's internet access is only further evidence that the next politicians we appoint need to have a REAL KNOWLEDGE OF TECHNOLOGY!
